Gazlam (Zulu for "my blood") is a 26-part educational series, the result of co-operation between SABC1 and SABC Education and due to be aired on SABC from 3 October. Gaz'lam II is the second season of this acclaimed series.
The explosive series sees a young man leaving his rural KwaZulu-Natal home for better prospects in Johannesburg - in Yeoville - because his girlfriend is to be married to the chief. Coupled with this is the rural to urban adjustment that the young man has to undergo.
Gazlam's theme reflects how people endeavour to follow thorny paths in their quest to fulfil their dreams. The drama is targeting adults in the 16-35 age group, as it delves into topics affecting the youth and adults and the challenges of HIV/Aids.
Hence the culmination, by the series, in key social issues comprising love, sex, relationships and making decisions that impact on people's lives.
The name of the series was chosen because of the close relationships between different types of people and the close blood ties reflected in the drama.
The Gazlam cast include renowned actors like Thembi Seete, who plays Lerato and appeared in Yizo Yizo, and Manaka Ranaka, who plays Portia and appeared briefly in Isidingo, where she played Nandipha. In Gazlam, Portia has a fulfilling job with a NGO, and she appears to be quite contented in celibacy after being hurt by a lover who ditched her. Bubu Mazibuko will be playing Thuli who, like Portia, is a woman carving her way through her career, and is exemplary to others around her. Though married, her challenges include bringing up a six-year-old son, and is burdened and frustrated by a husband who has recently been retrenched and is having an extra-marital affair.
